Course Description

This course was developed to train non-engineers who wish to serve as a Qualified Persons. It provides advanced knowledge to capably carry out many non-engineering duties cited in the OSHA regulations.

The duties of the Qualified Persons build on the knowledge of Competent Persons so this course requires proof of Competent Person certification prior to attending.

Exercises include advanced assessment of hazards, selection of systems and equipment, determining clearances, writing /assessing procedures and certification of anchorage strength through testing. While this course does discuss training needs, it does not provide, assess and certify training abilities or provide training materials, since it builds on prior “Competent” certifications for training.


Course Overview

  • An overview of active and Passive Fall Protection options.
  • Assessment and ranking of Fall Hazards.
  • Criteria for selecting Fall Arrest and Travel restraint systems.
  • Innovative Travel restraint solutions for sloping surfaces, elevated anchorages, inside Mobile Elevating Work Platforms and Double Travel Restraint at corners.
  • Selecting energy absorbers and determining if they are adequate to absorb the fall energy.
  • An overview of the requirements of the ANSI Z359 and CSA Z259 standards and how equipment certified to these standards really performs.
  • An overview of the ANSI Z359.6, CSA Z259.16 and other worldwide standards for “Design of active fall protection systems”, to know when to engage Qualified Fall Protection Engineers.
  • Swing fall hazards and calculations.
  • Selecting, certifying and using simple Pre-engineered manufactured systems.
  • Vertical fall arrest systems: vertical lifelines, self-retracting devices, ladder systems.
  • Horizontal fall arrest systems: horizontal lifelines and rigid rails.
  • Force management anchorages and how they affect systems anchored to them.
  • General understanding of Horizontal Lifeline performance: sag, tension, energy absorption and clearance.
  • A general understanding of rescue requirements when using Fall Protection systems.
  • State of the art, innovative Fall Protection solutions that may be useful when regulations cannot easily be met.
  • Knowing when to consult a Qualified Fall Protection Engineer.

Current Competent Persons who wish to be prepared for advanced (Qualified Person) duties in Fall Protection.
