Course Description

This course was developed to train non-engineers who wish to serve as a Qualified Persons. It provides advanced knowledge to capably carry out many non-engineering duties cited in the OSHA regulations.

The duties of the Qualified Persons build on the knowledge of Competent Persons so this course requires proof of Competent Person certification prior to attending.

Exercises include advanced assessment of hazards, selection of systems and equipment, determining clearances, writing /assessing procedures and certification of anchorage strength through testing. While this course does discuss training needs, it does not provide, assess and certify training abilities or provide training materials, since it builds on prior “Competent” certifications for training.

  • Vertical fall arrest systems: vertical lifelines, self-retracting devices, ladder systems.
  • Horizontal fall arrest systems: horizontal lifelines and rigid rails.
  • Force management anchorages and how they affect systems anchored to them.
  • General understanding of Horizontal Lifeline performance: sag, tension, energy absorption and clearance.
  • A general understanding of rescue requirements when using Fall Protection systems.
  • State of the art, innovative Fall Protection solutions that may be useful when regulations cannot easily be met.
  • Knowing when to consult a Qualified Fall Protection Engineer.
